Does New Zealand have a medical program?

Yes, medical cannabis is legal in New Zealand.

In 2018, the Misuse of Drugs (Medicinal Cannabis) Amendment Bill Act was passed in New Zealand, legalizing marijuana for medical purposes.

Despite the legalization of medicinal cannabis, New Zealand’s medical marijuana program has come under fire for being among the strictest in the world, which makes it extremely difficult for patients to obtain effective treatment.

The first CBD medications produced in New Zealand were only made accessible to patients in 2021.

 

What are the rules for medical use?

New Zealanders who have a prescription from their doctor can purchase legal cannabis products.

When prescribing medication, the physician needs to be very specific about the product’s brand, type, dosage, and intended use. A prescription for cannabis containing THC can only be obtained by patients who are either trying to treat MS spasticity or have terminal illnesses.

The only medications available to the other patients are CBD products and Sativex, which require a prescription to be obtained.

What are the medical program limits?

Other than CBD and Sativex, all cannabis products are Class B1 controlled substances within New Zealand’s strict laws. These medications are only available for use in treating multiple sclerosis spasticity or terminal illnesses.

A prescription for cannabis may only be given to patients for a maximum of three months at a time.
