In Myanmar, cannabis use and possession are governed by the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law (1993). Any “drug user” who is discovered in possession of cannabis, according to the law’s original wording, “shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend from a minimum of three years to a maximum of five years.”

Treatment must also be received by the offender, whether or not they are addicted to cannabis. According to the law, those who commit crimes but do not attend treatment “shall be punished with imprisonment.”
