Yes, medical cannabis is legal in Barbados. The Barbados Medicinal Cannabis Act of 2019 lets individuals perform actions with medical cannabis for scientific and medical treatment reasons, as long as they follow the rules set by the Barbados Medicinal Cannabis Licensing Authority (BMCLA). 

What are the rules for medical use?

In Barbados, only licensed doctors possess the authority to prescribe medicinal cannabis, and its dispensing is legally restricted to pharmacists, provided the patient presents a valid prescription and a form of identification.

 

What are the qualifying medical conditions for eligibility?

Currently, there are no specific medical conditions that are exclusively allowed, but access to medicinal cannabis can be provided by a doctor through a prescription.

What are the medical program limits?

A pharmacy or therapeutic facility is not allowed to give a patient more than a 30-day supply of a single prescription at a time if the prescription calls for recurrent use over a three-month period.

 

What methods of use are permitted under the medical program?

Medical cannabis can be administered through various formulations, including vapors, tinctures, sprays, oral forms, transdermal patches, ointments, and suppositories.

 

Is there home delivery for medical cannabis?

Only a pharmacist or other authorized staff member working in a pharmacy or therapeutic facility may fill the prescription.

 

Is CBD legal in Barbados?

No, CBD is not legal in Barbados. CBD is deemed illegal in Barbados because its importation into the country is not permitted. Only seeds, tissue culture, and planting material are allowed to be imported into Barbados. 

Is cannabis decriminalized in Barbados?

Yes, cannabis is decriminalized in Barbados. A referendum that decriminalized the possession of up to 14 grams of cannabis was held in September 2020. Offenders will face a $200 fine via a “fixed penalty notice,” which is similar to a traffic ticket.
